Case Study: End-to-End Brand Architecture & Launch Strategy for ZerOne

The Challenge

ZerOne is a cutting-edge sports performance and healthcare facility located in West Edmonton Mall. Six months prior to their grand opening, they faced a complex marketing challenge: they needed to successfully launch and position three distinct sub-brands (Hockeyology, Athleticare, and Sports Performance Labs) under one unified, premium corporate identity. They needed a holistic strategy that could be executed rapidly across digital, print, and physical retail spaces.

The Approach: Strategy-to-Execution

Acting as the Lead Creative Strategist and Art Director for the launch, I was brought in to bridge the gap between ZerOne’s ambitious business goals and the tactical, visual execution required to open their doors. This required an end-to-end approach—taking the brand from high-level positioning all the way to environmental design and digital customer acquisition on a strict deadline.

Phase 1: Brand Architecture & Environmental Design

  • Visual Identity: Refined the existing wordmarks and established comprehensive brand guidelines to unify the sub-brands, identifying “science and technology” as their key visual differentiators in the crowded sports market.
  • Spatial Art Direction: Translated the digital brand into the physical world. I created the concept sketches and visual renderings that dictated the retail space fit-out, display arrangements, wall graphics, and the aesthetic of the GaMA performance labs.
  • Physical Assets: Designed custom merchandise, apparel, and large-scale facility signage, including a custom branded Zamboni wrap.

Phase 2: Go-To-Market Strategy & Digital Production

  • Strategic Framework: Developed the core marketing architecture, defining key objectives across sales, brand awareness, community partnerships, and education to address their dual-market challenge (elite hockey training vs. allied healthcare).
  • Web & E-Commerce: Designed, built, and launched the ZerOne website. Collaborated with subject matter experts to optimize content and integrated the e-commerce infrastructure for membership and service sales.
  • Campaign Execution: Produced all investor packages, sales collateral, and digital campaign assets. Executed targeted, data-driven advertising utilizing demographic and geo-location data, running continuous A/B tests across Meta and Google Ads.

The Result: A Line Out the Door

The comprehensive strategy culminated in a highly successful grand opening event. Marketing efforts—which included securing and directing promotional content with the Edmonton Oilers’ Ryan Nugent-Hopkins—generated massive local momentum. On launch day, hundreds of attendees lined up outside the facility, immediately establishing ZerOne as a premier, revenue-generating destination for elite training and healthcare.

Strategic Takeaway

The ZerOne launch demonstrates the power of a unified creative strategy. By eliminating the friction between the strategic planning phase and the creative production phase, I was able to rapidly deploy a massive, multi-channel brand rollout, ensuring that the initial business objectives translated perfectly into the final visual reality.
